Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)

The most popular hearing aid style globally - and for good reason. An ultra-thin wire connects a tiny processor behind the ear to a miniature speaker (receiver) placed directly in the ear canal. Delivers natural, clear sound with a nearly invisible look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is RIC different from BTE?
In a BTE, both the microphone and speaker are housed in the unit behind the ear. In a RIC, the speaker (receiver) is moved into the ear canal via a thin wire - this improves sound quality, reduces feedback, and makes the device smaller.
Will a RIC fit my ear canal?
RIC aids use small silicone domes (open or closed) that fit most adults comfortably. For significant hearing loss, a custom earmold can replace the dome. Our audiologist will find the right dome size during your fitting.
Can I connect a RIC aid to my smartphone?
Most modern RIC aids from brands like Phonak, Starkey, ReSound and Signia offer direct Bluetooth streaming to both iPhone and Android smartphones. You can take calls, stream music, and adjust settings from an app.
Is the receiver wire fragile?
The receiver wire is designed to be flexible and durable. However it is the most common part requiring servicing. We stock replacement receivers in the clinic and can swap them quickly, usually at minimal or no charge within warranty.
Do RIC hearing aids whistle?
Modern RIC aids have very effective feedback cancellation. Whistling (feedback) is rare and usually happens only if the dome does not fit properly - which our audiologist corrects during fitting.
